"This is a very skinny differentiation in my book. On the one hand American Beauty is a lush, corrosive look at a mediocirty (and a society) in the midlle of a mid-life crisis. The world is portrayed vividly and with some keen insights, but sometimes it seems a little like rich-white people whining. O Brother occupies a more serious time with more life or death consequences but treats its subject matter with much less weight. Both are impeccably case and performed with refined precision, and the art direction of each is truly wondrous. Very slight edge to the Coens here."
