You are taking what I say and yourself way too seriously. I have no idea why this is such a big deal to you. I've never insulted you or judged you in any way. I was joking. You didn't even express an actual opinion about Life Aquatic beyond calling it "shitty". Maybe you if you actually offered some examples of why you dislike it, I could discuss it with you. There is no reason to get so agitated.

If you hadn't noticed, many of my comments aren't totally serious. I try to explain my position, but I also kid around. There are a lot of movies I hate that I wonder why others like, but I wouldn't give them crap about it for no reason. If people explain themselves reasonably, I am accepting. I know a lot of movies I like aren't considered great by others, anyway.

Sorry I forgot to get back to you about Braveheart. I thought it was a good film overall, with its action scenes and cinematography and you can get really lost in this film, as it DOES pull you in, but the film has its share of flaws.

1. the generic characters
2. hollow plot
3. Wallace/Princess romance really devalued his dead wife

Hope to hear back from you :)

Hey there. Read your comment on the Akira vs. Princess Mononoke matchup. I haven't seen Mononoke, but I'm curious, what is it about Akira that disappointed you?

I can't really recommend anything to be honest because im in a similar position; Spirited Away was the first ones i saw and pretty animation and designs aside, I just didn't get it at all. That hasn't put me off Miyazaki completely, but i haven't got off to a good start. The only other one I've started watching is Ghost in the Shell, and i fell asleep 10 mins in (though to be fair that was more due to exhaustion than boredom).

So i think you and i are in a the same boat, the difference being that I love Akira to death, hence why i asked. I love the characters, both in design and personality (dare i say that i grew to like some of them more than any Disney characters ive ever watched, and that's saying A LOT!). i love the animation (some of the best 2D animation i have ever seen), I love the designs, i love the action, the scope, the themes, the soundtrack, the setting (i could go on). I pretty much love EVERYTHING about it; it's the kind of film shich could have been made especially for me as it has just about everything i could ask for in a film. It's not absolutely perfect and it's not in my top 20, but it's easily my favourite animated film period. And that's coming from someone who, like yourself, is largely unenthralled by anime. I guess i just have VERY distinct preferences, and if i have even minute prejudices against a genre, it takes a VERY special film to not only overcome them, but also win my heart.

As far as starting somewhere else is concerned, i've heard good things about Grave of the Fireflies as well, but I'd also like to give Princess Mononoke and Arrietty a go to try and get into Miyazaki films, the former especially.

Hey, man. I know you really, really hate Predator 2 but regard the original highly. I, on the other hand, love both of them dearly. I'm interested in understanding your reasons for hating the sequel, if it's no bother.

0 people liked this  √

PiccoloKing on 7/8/2013 Reply  ·

It's all right if you feel that way. I am a bit surprised that you didn't find the sequel violent enough. Predator 2 originally got an NC-17 rating and several re-edits had to be made in order to release it R-rated. Critics at the time also panned it for the perverse depictions of violence.

It isn't easy to describe but the hunter hierarchy made the city setting explosive. High crime rates in L.A., rising temperatures, gangs fighting among themselves, police going after the gangs, gangs going after the police, and the predator going after everybody. I liked the entire idea. Give me this over the safe and uninspired PREDATORS every time.

As things are, the original Predator has gained mainstream praise whereas the sequel still remains more of a cult classic.

I've been curious about the film 'Heat' for sometime now. It's a movie that a lot of people love that has two of the greatest actors ever in the same film and I was wondering, is there anything other than the fact that De Niro and Pacino are in the same film that makes it extra special. How did you like Gravity? Personally, I thought it was fantastic. It's 2nd favorite of the year so far behind Star Trek: Into Darkness. The performances were amazing and it made you feel like you were right with the characters the whole time. Cuaron did an amazing job, he also directed Children of Men you know. ;)

That's awesome! Funny thing is I will also be checking it out on Sunday. Friday and Saturday will be way to busy, especially at a theatre like mine. Hope you enjoy it! And I would agree Shutter Island is not as good as some of his other work, but is just shy of my Top 20. That's how much I LOVE Scorsese. I've seen The Big Chill, great great movie, but your opinion is definitely understandable. The Hangover 3 was very average, doesn't even come close to the original. And The Conjuring was an amazing horror film. James Wan did a great job with it. I see that you rank it quite high on your list at 84%. I just realized that Gladiator is #4, above Shawshank, Die Hard, and Forrest! Wow, that's surprising!

And do you think it will ever change? How loyal and/or biased are you to that movie? Also, the same questions apply for your top 5 as well as your top 10. Are they pretty much edged in stone on your chart or have your top 5 and/or top 10 changed over the past few years?

So what are you most excited to see this fall season? I'm personally dying to see Gone Girl, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Interstellar. Oh, man Interstellar looks so good!

Just out of curiosity, what is your favorite movie trilogy and what is your favorite movie from that trilogy?

Thank you for your reply to my earlier question(s) about your favorite film and your top ten. I asked this question to various people because I've battled with replacing my #1 film for over a year now. I saw Casablanca for the first time in 1999 I think. It left a profound impression on me. It soon became my favorite film as I would routinely revisit it. So, for roughly 15 years, Casablanca has been my favorite film. I've had some really good times with it as well. I first saw it when I was in the military. I just relate to so much of the film. Oddly enough, I relate to both Victor Laszlo AND Rick Blaine!! Victor for the military lifestyle that requires you to be away from the love of your life, and Rick for the duality of choosing between someone you love and doing the right thing. So many themes strike all the right chords with me.

Fast-forward the time to 2013. I saw Vertigo for the first time ever. It blew me away more than any film I had ever seen. Everything about it was brilliant. And the more I watched it, I began to develop an obsession for it. I've never watched a film so many times in such a short span. I watched Vertigo more than ten times in a month. It just drew me in. I wanted to put it as my #1 film, but I didn't want to make a decision based on a knee-jerk reaction. So, I gave it time to see if my affinity for it would lessen. I even forced myself to stop watching it so much. Well, a few weeks ago, I showed it to some friends and family. I discovered that my affection for this film hadn't changed a bit. So now comes the hard part. I almost feel like I'm cheating on Casablanca if I put Vertigo #1. To answer my own question, I'm very loyal to my favorite film of all time. But I think the time has come for me to be true to my chart and put Vertigo at #1.

I've seen Casablanca recently and I still love it as much as I did when I first watched it. But I think I enjoy Vertigo from start to finish a little more than I love Casablanca from start to finish.

I know I'm probably taking this way too serious, but watching movies is one of my favorite pass times. What do you think? Have you ever had this dilemma?

What did you think of Interstellar, Big Hero 6?

Good to hear man! I also enjoyed both, but I'm on the opposite side. I enjoyed Big Hero 6, but thought Interstellar was such a great film. A fantastic weekend for film, nonetheless. Are you gonna check out Dumb and Dumber To or Foxcatcher anytime soon?

Hey man, long time no talk! How have things been lately? I've been very busy and hardly active on this site, but I see that you've been active, which is good. Seen anything good this year so far? I recently saw The Loft and The Boy Next Door, which both were bad.

John Wick's a great one, really enjoyed it, and glad you did also. Yeah, those look pretty great. Also, Star Wars TFA, and Kingsman next week! All is good, thanks!

What'd you think of Fury?

Hahaha, definitely not, Marvel is on a roll right now. Especially with their huge lineup of movies coming up in the next few years, looks crazy! Yeah, Ant-Man looks solid regardless of the teaser, since it is a risk for Marvel, and that paid off with Guardians, didn't it?

Did you get dragged to see Fifty Shades? hahah

Hey man, I just watched Harakiri for the first time and was amazed to say the least! I then watched Rashomon and loved it as well. So, I'm now making it my business to watch more from Kobayashi and Kurosawa. I'm familiar with their filmographies. How would you rank their films with relation to each other? Also, in what recommended order should I watch them?

Yo! Long time no talk!

Avengers Deux entered my Flickchart at #163 out of 1171 movies, so I definitely liked it. That said, it's the second-lowest ranked MCU movie I have right now (only The Incredible Hulk is lower). I just felt it took too long to really get going. It somewhat redeems itself in the last 30-45 minutes (which were great), but not enough for me to walk away a smidge disappointed by it all.

Plot-wise, my biggest beef was with the main villain, Ultron. His motivations are rather poorly conceived. He wants to destroy the world because...he's the bad guy. It just seems to me like Whedon phoned in certain parts of the screenplay.

That said, it was never boring, the final battle was excellent, and Scarlett Witch and Vision were show-stealingly great.

Judging from where you ranked it, it looks like you liked it as well, but it didn't knock your socks off. How do you think the sequel compares to the first one?

Hot Pursuit is definitely at the top of my list. Okay, not really. To be honest, the only totally must-see movie of the summer for me is Ant-Man. Mad Max: Fury Road and Fantastic Four have me intrigued, but I'm not quite sure about them yet.

The new trailer for Ant-Man that was shown before Avengers got me really psyched to see it. It looks like it could be a fun, Guardians of the Galaxy-type movie.

It's my #15!

I loved it. Aside from his overuse of computer-generated characters, I thought Abrams knocked it out of the park.

Ah, I see it failed to crack your top 100. Give it time, it'll win you over. It's calling to YOU, son! Just let it in!
