"The Rules of the Game is one of the great films of world cinema, whose reputation is aided immensely, if inadvertently, by the fact that the world it is satirizing would be shattered forever by the German occupancy. Diary of a Chambermaid has a great deal to recommend it, but it is not an accidental centerpiece of world history."
