Watch some more of Wes Anderson. Looking at your list I see you ignored him a little. He's excellent!

Cleckley, you seen Bangkok Knockout yet?
Cleckley on 5/29/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
No man. I want to see it but it's not out on DVD or Blu-Ray here (this is a movie that I don't want to rip it online - I need a crytal clear pic). It looks exciting from the trailers but did I detect some wire-work? Alos, I worry that it might turn out like Born To Fight with 70% bullshit, 20% action and 10% so idiotic it's funny. But Thailand are makin' waves. Quite a few projects from Yanin and Jaa apparently. Heard they might even work with Sammo!
ToryK on 5/29/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I've heard the same. Can you imagine? Sammo's choreography would take Jaa's game to the next level. About BKO, I'm thinking about just buying the Thai DVD. Sure, it's got no subs, but the DVDs I bought for Born to Fight and TYG didn't have any subs either, and I followed the movies just fine. And from what I've heard, it's got a shitty story and the acting is supposed to be terrible (so idiotic it's funny), but it's supposed to have topped BTF in the action department.
I'm willing to wait. BTF was a disappointing experience so I'm not in urgent need of a second fix. Nothing happened in that film for the better part of an hour. But the conclusion was something bizarre; it was 'so bad it's good' AND genuinely brilliant all at once. Never seen anything so bizarre. When the hostages all got up to sing the National Anthem I was in stitches. When the guy with one leg started kicking ass I was floored from both laughter and awe. If BKO is anything like that (with much, much less screen time devoted to all the unecessary talky/story crap) then it'll be awesome. If you do see it soon, you've gotta let me know how it is. Also, out of curiosity, are you a fan of MA flicks because you are/were a fighter/practitioner yourself?

No, not at all. Most kids get into whatever they're going to be into when they're around 6, right? Rumble in the Bronx hit the States when I was in the first grade. I loved it, so I latched on to Jackie Chan and I've been a fan ever since. I'd just rather watch the stuff HK has to offer over some of the crappy stuff we get here.
Cleckley on 5/31/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Yeah, I hear that.
ToryK on 6/5/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Just found out that BKO is hitting the US on August 30th and the UK on July 4th as Knockout.

Ah, nice one man, thanks. Look at that, we're actually gonna get a movie before you guys!

We are friends forever now. But how did you find me?
Cleckley on 8/19/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Probably saw your comments on an earlier discussions page. Batman vs Batman or Infernal vs The Departed maybe...?
BisonDollah on 8/25/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
On the contrary, every BisonDollah will be worth five English pounds. At least that is the exchange rate the Bank of England will set when I kidnap their Queen! ;)Thanks for the add! You'd probably like Dr. Strangelove best from the films left in your unseen top 100! =)

Some friendly advice: DO NOT buy Bangkok Knockout. If you absolutely have to see it, Netflix that shit. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
NM. Went to rank it and realized you've already seen it.

Oh God, don't get me started. The Tai Chi guy was sick, as were a couple of the other fighters. But they clearly put the wrong guy in the lead role, the love triangle was beyond stupid, and what was with all that nonsense at the beginning? Fuck, it took forever for the thing to get started. When the cage fight finally came, I thought I was in for a fun movie, but other than the aforementioned Tai Chi guy, it all went downhill really, really fast. The action would have to be absolutely INSANE for the movie to redeem itself after all the stupidity, but it just wasn't meant to be, I guess. I wanted to like it. I really did. But other than a few fun bits...*shudder* I'm probably being too hard on it, but it'll be a while before I watch it again to find out.

If you want a pick-me-up after all the disappointment, do yourself a favor and give Merantau a look. I just watched it for the first time and it is damn good. I think it gives Jaa and Yen a run for their money for best MA film of the decade. The only thing I think you might hold against it is some of its fight scenes. Some of the earlier stuff can kind of blend together.
ToryK on 9/13/2011 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
I think I'd have to disagree with you there. I think it's juuuuust shy of being Jaa-quality, but I think it beats Yen's stuff. Had Yen and Yip stuffed SPL and Flash Point with a bit more action, then I might agree. But I don't think there's enough of it, as good as the action is, for me to choose them over Merantau. I was in Heaven for the last forty or so minutes of that movie. And I'm hearing that their next movie, The Raid, is the best thing in decades. Like, Hard Boiled-quality.

You're not being an ass. Different strokes and all that, ya know? I'm not as big on MI:2 as I was when it came out. My excuse for loving it then? I was in the fifth grade. Now, not so much. But I dig Face/Off. I know it's corny and it has its flaws, but I actually think it's one of the better action movies of the 90's. Broken Arrow's dumb fun and so is Hard Target, but then again, I'm a sucker for Van Damme movies. At the end of the day, I'd put Face/Off at the top of heap as far his American stuff goes. Haven't seen Reign of Assassins, but I've heard nothing but good things. Now, his Hong Kong stuff is some of the sappiest, most corny stuff I've ever seen in my life. But I've always appreciated how black-and-white everything is in his movies. And I've always been touched by the male bonding. I know it bothers the more homophobic among us, but I think the two big reasons it doesn't bug me are 1) I'm not homophobic and 2) I'm very, very close to my kid brother. I've always seen the relationships in his movies as inflated, fatalistic versions of the way I feel about my brother...Shit, I'm rambling and I might find myself embarrassed after re-reading this. But Hard Boiled, male bonding aside, is in my top ten because it is the most balls out action movie I've ever seen in my life. Good God, what a movie. You should give it another look some time.

You know what, I actually meant to check I'll Sleep out after I saw Get Carter for the first time. Thanks for the suggestion. But yeah, I hear the suggestions of homoeroticism in reference to Woo's stuff (and other buddy movies, for that matter) all the time. I figure, people will see what they'll see and I move on. Whatevs. Good Will Hunting's too damn good not to watch due to some macho bullshit. I gotta admit though, the American Pie thing made me chuckle. I haven't seen it in a long time, so I can't really comment. But then again, people would probably laugh out loud if they knew about some of the stuff I find touching, so it's all good. And my kid brother'll be 17 next month. The 5-year gap seems a little weird for us to be so close, but the kid's always been pretty smart and he was an ace at Twisted Metal 4 by the time he was 4, so he's always been cool in my book. He likes to take shortcuts but he's got a good head on his shoulders and he's got a good heart. How far apart in age are you from yours?

Hey thanks for accepting my friend request cleckley, I just was looking through your flick chart and you've seen a lot more movies than me and your top movies are a lot different to mine. My favourite current director is p.t. Anderson, I was wondering, considering your wealth of movie knowledge what your opinion is of p.t. Anderson. My favourite film of all time being there will be blood, so I was wondering what you think?
And also I see that matrix is in your top ten. I have it on foxtel at the moment but I'm reluctant to watch it because the whole movie looks a little corny now. Tell me, is it as good as it was when it came out or has it aged badly?

I don't know about you, but the Ennio Morricone score grabs my attention straight away when it starts in The Untouchables. Then Connery and De Niro do the rest. It's just a awesome movie, good choice for your top ten list!

I think I want to go down that dark alley first, if only because I am drawn to darkness. I will try and track down all the movies you suggest. They are probably just as good as any other. Sadly, I won't live long enough to watch all the wonderful films India has gifted us with. You are providing me with a much appreciated service.

No, I think I'm currently in decent health. I eat the necessary amount of fiber most days, and I try to do my stretches on a regular basis. I guess I could do more cardio, but I'm in my healthy weight range. I just have to watch out for falling space debris and I should be fine. I'm just not sure what my psychological health will be like after watching all these movies you recommend. Your warnings do concern me somewhat.

Hey what was the name of that Chan book again? The one that has the bit about him meeting Yuen Biao. I'm thinking about giving it a read.
Many thanks, kind sir.
